On Wednesday 25th January the Year IV travelled to Nottingham on an English trip to see a production of one of their set texts:
An Inspector Calls. Charlotte Clarke reports on a very successful trip:
'From the moment the smoke cloud descended into the audience we were enveloped into a journey of intrigue and suspicion. Having studied the play, seeing – or not seeing – the surreal Inspector Goole’s penetrating stare, combined with effective lighting, added another dimension to our understanding of the text. The theatre experience enabled us to relate well-chosen dramatic costumes to each character’s unique personality. Sharp and fiery Mrs Birling wore deep reds embellished with black lace, whilst her daughter, on the other hand, started in a dress more extravagant than the price, but finished the play in the bare minimum as she shed off the fancy labels, and metaphorically, the mistakes of her past. Overall the costumes were historically locked and the set had plenty of authentic Edwardian touches. It was no accident, however, that the Birling’s family home seemed a little out of place, and designed reminiscent to a dolls house; opening out like an elaborate Cindy home. It was as if the Inspector was controlling the family like dolls.
I’d like to thank the English department on behalf of the year group for organising such a brilliant trip.'
