Book Club tackle 'The Finkler Question'
I am pleased to report on the second meeting of the Book Club held by Mrs Doyle on Friday afternoon. We had all been asked to read the Man Booker winner of the year ‘The Finkler Question.’ To give a brief summary of the storyline, a man named Treslove gets mugged by a woman. From then on he becomes infatuated with the thought of being a Jew. And so unravels his story line as well as his two friends’ – Libor and Finkler. Within the group there were many opinions voiced, as well as a question asked, ‘What was the Finkler Question?’ This turned into a rapid debate of the Jewish background, and the significance of having the status and pride of being a Jew. We also moved onto the discussion of ‘Where are all the women?’ We pondered on this thought for a while, until one girl came up with the conclusion that, there were a few women within the book, but they were all mad, dead or very weird. All of us, being a little feminist, hastened to disagree. This next debate had a lot of character, strong opinions and also a case of many more of the chocolate treats on the table to be eaten, mentioning no names. To conclude, we all found the book had many different points to discuss, while trying to actually figure out what ‘Treslove’ was doing with his life. Maybe that’s just a woman’s instinct, but I can say hand on heart I am very much looking forward to our next meeting.
