On Friday 16th of October, we, a small group of fifth years were released from a day of hard work at school to experience a day of non-stop languages at Milthorpe School.
We arrived early and were so ready for our 9am start yet we weren’t the only ones who arrived well in advance as 11 other schools joined us.
After having been put in groups (luckily we were together) we attended our first session, ‘Spanish in business’. So after having learnt 2000 Spanish words in 5 minutes (yes it can be done!) we moved onto ‘Spanish at University’. Again after learning a few more fun facts about Spain and being put on the spot one too many times, we had lunch. The next few sessions were the most interesting our group decided as it’s not every day you learn the Arabic alphabet and a few greetings. Pleased that we had learned ‘I am British’ (Ana Britaniya) for just incase we do visit the Dead Sea, we moved onto ‘A day in the life of an Interpreter’. We there discovered that they get paid very well among other things, so now we have all decided that we want to become interpreters! Our final session was Japanese where some of us didn’t grasp it as quickly as others. However after numerous explanations and even Senorita Leclerc having a go, we all came out knowing how to say, ‘What is it?’ in Japanese (Kore wan an desu ka). A great achievement. After a long day of languages we said goodbye to our hosts and hopped on the bus back to school, buzzing about our new found knowledge of languages and not being able to wait to show them off to our friends.
