Vendredi après-midi le vingt-sept janvier Madame Leaf et Madame Goodrick sont parties de Queen Margaret’s avec onze filles de Première et de Terminale. Nous avons pris le train à Londres et puis l’Eurostar jusqu’à la gare du Nord, très excitées et préparées pour un week-end plein de culture. Apres être arrivées à Paris, nous avions hâte d’arriver à notre ‘appart-hôtel’, qui était situé aux « Buttes-Chaumont », pas loin du centre-ville. 

Samedi matin, nous nous sommes réunies pour un petit déjeuner délicieux dans l’hôtel avant de prendre le métro pour le Musée du Luxembourg afin de visiter l’exposition sur Cézanne. Nous étudions Paul Cézanne pour l’un des modules culturels de nos études de Français à A2, donc nous avions de la chance d’avoir l’opportunité de regarder autant de ses peintures. Heureusement l’exposition était guidée et, bien que la femme ait parlé très rapidement en français, nous avons appris beaucoup sur l’artiste dont le style intéressant a constamment évolué et aussi sur les Impressionnistes eux-mêmes. Après avoir bien mangé, on a visité le grand magasin « Bon Marché », le premier grand magasin de Paris construit par Monsieur Eiffel, qui n’était pas du tout bon marché ! L’après-midi, nous sommes allées au Louvre (nous n’avions pas assez de temps pour visiter la galerie même, mais nous avons visité la place et la pyramide célèbre), La Place de la Concorde, où nous avons vu les lumières de la Tour Eiffel s’allumer, et aussi les Galeries Lafayettes. Le soir nous avons eu l’opportunité de préparer notre diner nous-mêmes dans nos appart-hôtels et plus tard on s’est toutes réunies pour manger le gâteau traditionnel qui s’appelle « la Galette des Rois ».

Dimanche matin on est allées au Musée D’Orsay pour regarder d’autres  peintures de Cézanne et les Impressionnistes et pour comparer les peintures de Cézanne qu’on avait vues Samedi à celles d’autres artistes. Malgré la queue qu’on devait faire pendant une demi-heure, la musée était une des choses les plus populaires qu’on ait fait parce qu’il y avait une grande sélection d’artistes et de styles. Apres avoir vu les peintures, on a bu un chocolat chaud délicieux (malgré le prix), dans le café qui avait des vues spectaculaires de la ville.  Après ça, nous avons marché jusqu’au Champs Elysées pour faire des courses. L’après-midi, nous avons pris le « Bus de Paris » pour voir toutes les choses touristiques de Paris en un après-midi. Nous sommes descendues pour voir l’Arc de Triomphe, La Tour Eiffel et Notre Dame ; malgré le froid, il faisait beau, donc c’était un jour parfait pour voir tout ça ! Ensuite on est allées à Montmartre, où on a pris le funiculaire pour le Sacré Cœur. La plupart des filles ont dit que c’était leur activité préférée du week-end, et je suis d’accord que c’était très beau et romantique, particulièrement parce qu’on a même pu assister à une partie de la messe du dimanche soir ! Pour finir, nous avons mangé un grand repas de trois plats dans un restaurant typiquement français dans le quartier Latin. C’était la manière parfaite de finir un weekend génial et tout le monde a passé du bon temps.

Lundi, nous étions tristes de partir de la belle ville, pourtant nous avons fini avec un grand petit-déjeuner dans un petit café avant d’aller à la Gare du Nord pour prendre l’Eurostar. Après avoir voyagé presque huit heures, on est rentrées à Queen Margaret’s très fatiguées mais heureuses que l’excursion ait été une vraie réussite. Nous voudrions remercier Madame Leaf et Madame Goodrick pour le weekend, et nous espérons qu’il y aura un autre voyage à Paris à l’avenir !

 

On Friday afternoon eleven girls from the Sixth Form took the train to London and then the Eurostar to the Gard du Nord, very excited and prepared for a weekend full of culture. After having arrived in Paris, we couldn’t wait to arrive at our “aparthotel”, which was in the “Buttes-Chaumont” area, not far from the city centre.

On Saturday morning, we regrouped for a delicious breakfast in the hotel. We took the metro to the Galerie de Luxembourg where we went to the Cezanne exhibition. We’re studying Cezanne for one of the cultural modules in our A2 French course, and so we were very lucky to have the opportunity to see so many of his paintings. Luckily the exhibition was guided and, although the woman spoke very quickly in French, we learned a lot about the artist whose interesting style often changed, as well as about the Impressionists themselves. After having had a delicious lunch, we went to the department store “Bon Marché”, the first department store in Paris which was built by Mr Eiffel, which wasn’t at all cheap! In the afternoon we went to the Louvre (we wouldn’t have had enough time to go to the gallery itself, but we visited the square and the famous pyramid), the Place de la Concord, where we saw the lights on the Eiffel Tour light up, and also the Galleries Lafayette. In the evening we had the opportunity to cook dinner ourselves in the apartments and later we reunited to eat the traditional cake called the “King’s Cake”.

On Sunday morning we went to the Musée d’Orsay to look at more paintings by Cezanne and the Impressionists and to compare the art we saw on Saturday with these other artists’. Despite the half an hour we spent queuing, the museum was one of the most popular things we did because there was such a wide variety of artists and styles. After having seen the paintings, we had a delicious hot chocolate (despite its price) in the café which had amazing views of the city. Afterwards, we walked to the Champs Elysées to do some shopping. In the afternoon, we took the Paris Bus so that we were able to see all the touristic things in Paris in one afternoon. We got off the bus to see the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame; despite the cold, it was a beautiful day, so it was the perfect time to see everything! Next we went to Montmartre, where we took the funicular up to Sacré Cœur. Most people have said that this was their favourite part of the weekend, and I agree that it was very beautiful and romantic, particularly as we were even able to sit in on the Sunday night mass. To finish, we ate a large three-course meal in a typically French restaurant in the Latin Quarter. It was the perfect way to end a great weekend and everyone had a great time.

On Monday, we were sad to be leaving the beautiful city, however we finished with a huge breakfast in a little café before going to the Gard du Nord to get the Eurostar. After having travelled for almost eight hours, we returned to Queen Margaret’s very tired but happy that the trip had been such a success. We would like to thank Madame Leaf and Madame Goodrick for the weekend, and we hope that there will be another trip to Paris in the future!
