Physics at Flamingo Land!
On Wednesday the 5th of October the Upper Sixth Physics group set off in the mini bus to Flamingo Land Theme Park for the afternoon. On arrival, we found a virtually deserted car park, good news for us as it concluded in no queues for the ride. The next two and a half hours involved taking on the roller coasters, while some of us ‘chickened out’ on the scarier or the sickening rides, Catherine Hocknell managed to tackle each and every ride we came by. The bulk of us coped with the steepest roller coaster in the world, named the Mumbo Jumbo, which measures 112º. Despite being terrifying, it was most definitely the best. Some physics was of course involved, for we looked at the circular motion (an A2 topic) of the spinning rides as well as carrying an accelerometer in our pockets during each ride. The accelerometer measures acceleration in 3 dimensions then stores the data, enabling us to look and analyse the data once back at school. We concluded our time at Flamingo Land with a splash on the water ride, then a few last times on the Kumali and Velocity in order to dry off before returning to the bus. A quick stop at a delicious fish and chip restaurant on our return to school, rounded the day off. A huge thank you to Mrs Thomas and Mr Lightfoot for organizing the adrenaline filled trip.
