David currently has one daughter at QM, and his elder two daughters are both OMs.
MR MICHAEL OAKLEY (Company Secretary & Clerk to the Governors)
Michael Oakley spent 35 years as a Solicitor in private practice, and is now a Consultant with Crombie Wilkinson in Malton and York. Since 1979 he has been HM Coroner for North Yorkshire East and is also an Immigration Judge and a Judge in the Appeals Tribunal. Michael is a former member (for 15 years) of the General Synod of the Church of England as well as past President of the Yorkshire Law Society and a Past Master of the Merchant Taylors Company of York. Michael has been Clerk to the Governors and Company Secretary at Queen Margaret’s School since 1986. His wife and daughter are both former pupils at QM.
MRS ELIZABETH BELL (Executive)
Liz Bell was educated at an independent girls’ school in Lancashire and, upon leaving school, she took up a post in banking before making a career change into sales & sales management with a large national company. After 12 years she left to assist in the development of the family business. Liz’s other interests include charity work (she is on a committee for research into children’s cancer & helps with raising vital funds), interior design and walking. Liz joined the QM Board of Governors in November 2009, and her daughter currently attends the school.
MR CHARLES FORBES ADAM DL
Charlie Forbes Adam is the current owner of Escrick Park Estate, which has been in his family for over 300 years. The estate comprises of farming, forestry, let commercial, agricultural and residential property, as well as a 180 pitch holiday park and a 7 mile horse riding cross-country course. Charlie is the High Steward of Selby Abbey, Deputy Lieutenant of East Riding of Yorkshire and Vice Chairman of the Yorkshire committee of the Country Land & Business Association and was also Chairman of the Selby Abbey Appeal from 2003 – 2008. Charlie joined the QM Board of Governors in 1993, and his daughter is an OM.
MR (THOMAS) STEPHEN KETTLEWELL (Executive)
Stephen Kettlewell was educated at St Peter's School, York and Bristol University, from where he gained an economics degree. Following 10 years working as a North American Reinsurance Broker in London, he returned north to join the family shipping business which he now runs as joint Managing Director. Stephen is honoured to be appointed both Her Majesty's Consul of Denmark at Hull, and Her Majesty's Consul of the Netherlands for the East and Northeast of England. Stephen joined the QM Board of Governors in June 2009 and he currently has three daughters at QM.
THE HON MRS JUSTICE ELEANOR KING DBE
Eleanor King is an old girl of Queen Margaret’s. She was called to the Bar in 1979 and practiced from Chambers in Leeds. She became a Queens Counsel in 1999 and a High Court Judge in 2008. Eleanor and her husband Tom have four daughters all of whom were educated at QM. Eleanor joined the Board of Governors at the time of the parent’s ‘buy out’ in 1989 and became the Chairman of Governors in 1993. Eleanor resigned as Chairman of the Board in July 2011, and the school community remains extremely grateful for her continued hard work on behalf of QM.
MRS (CAROLINE) MELANIE GOODER
Melanie Gooder was educated at Queen Margaret’s, before spending a Gap Year in Italy at the Universita per Stranieri in Perugia, followed by Leeds University. She was proprietor of a ladies’ fashion shop in Beverley before joining the family property development business, Osprey Commercial Properties based in Malton, in 1989. Melanie became Secretary to the Old Margaretian Association (OMA) in 2004, and joined the QM Board of Governors in March 2008.
MR NICHOLAS LAMBERT (Executive)
Nicholas Lambert was educated at Aysgarth School and Radley College before Foundation Accounting at Leeds Polytechnic. Nicholas attended RMA Sandhurst in 1980 before commission in 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards and serving as Adjutant to the Royal Armoured Corps Junior Leaders Regiment. He joined Cazenove & Co in 1986 in the Fund Management arm, becoming a Partner and Head of Private Clients. He moved to Sarasin & Partners in 2005 managing charity and private portfolios as well as being business manager for the client business. Nicholas’ interests include Cricket (inc. Yorks Gents), Golf, Equestrian (now by watching children and Pony Club Committee member), Country sports, Africa, Help for Heroes Bike Ride. Nicholas joined the QM Board of Governors in June 2010; he currently has one daughter at Queen Margaret’s, and his eldest daughter is an OM.
MISS EMILY PEARSON
Emily Pearson graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, in 2006 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. She also spent a year at King’s College London, attaining a BSc in Biomedical Science. Whilst at university Emily was captain of the college rowing club and coxed the 1st VIII boat in both university and national competitions. Following graduation Emily completed an internship at the Royal Veterinary College Equine Hospital. After this she moved back to Yorkshire where she now works at Stirk & Associates Equine Practice in Ripon. Outside of work Emily is a keen rider, competing her own horse in British Eventing. Emily joined the QM Board of Governors in February 2010 and has a sister currently at Queen Margaret’s.
THE DUCHESS OF RUTLAND
Her Grace The Duchess of Rutland was born to a Welsh Borders farming family. She married the 11th Duke in 1992 and has five children; her three daughters all attend Queen Margaret’s School. Her Grace’s interests include interior design, singing, conservation and history. She has broadcast on radio and on television. She is Patron or President of a number of charities including Rainbows Children Hospice in Loughborough, and she joined the QM Board of Governors in June 2010.
MR (FRANCIS) ALEXANDER SCOTT (Executive)
Alex Scott is Executive Chairman of Sand Aire, a Multi-Family Office he founded in 1996. He has served as a non-executive director on the boards of both public and private companies. He was educated at a comprehensive school (the Lakes School, Windermere), Oxford University (Exeter College, MA, Politics, Philosophy and Economics) and business school (IMD Lausanne, MBA). He is a trustee of the Francis C Scott Charitable Trust and a director of the not-for-profit Institute for Family Business (UK). Alex joined the QM Board of Governors in July 2010 and currently has two daughters at Queen Margaret’s.
MR IAN SMALL
Ian Small studied at the Universities of Sussex and Oxford and has recently completed an MPhil at the University of York. His teaching career began as a supply teacher at a secondary modern school in Essex, but since Oxford he taught at Abbotshome School in Derbyshire, where he was Head of English and a boys' housemaster (and where he met Alison, his late wife, who in the 1990s was Deputy Head at Queen Margaret's). Ian and Alison then moved to Stowe School, Buckingham, where Ian was Head of Drama and where they together opened the first full girls' boarding house. From 1988-2004 Ian was Headmaster of Bootham School in York. In 1993-5 he was National Chairman of the Boarding Schools Association. He has always been keen on drama, having been elected President of OUDS in succession to Diana Quick, and having acted, sung and directed many productions at his three schools. In York he has taken part in many productions for York Opera and York Light Opera, among other companies. He is a governor of four schools, including The Minster School in York. He served on HMC Committee and was regional Chairman. Currently he is a trustee of HMC Projects, which brings students and teachers from former communist countries to British independent schools for scholarships and professional development.
