Good Contacts
The school is constantly striving to broaden the girls' outlook and perspective on life and to this end welcomes visiting speakers. Many parents will doubtless have contacts to enable them to bring inspirational speakers or interesting people to talk to the girls and parents. If you have such a contact, or would like to suggest a topic,
please get in touch with Alastair MacMillan, Chairman -

PFA Tennis Tournament 2011

The Annual Tennis Tournament for parents and daughters was played in the usual spirit of friendly competition on Sunday 26th June. In the Junior Daughters and Mothers section we had, we believe, our first win from a grandmother as Emma Tomlinson and her grandmother Mrs Cam Uberg defeated Rosie and Virginia Hoddinott in their final. Congratulations to winners of all sections: Honor and Ralph Congreve (Junior Daughters and Fathers); Flora and David Boscawen (Middle Daughters and Fathers); Celia and Laura Boddy (Middle Daughters and Mothers); Anna and David Sheppard (Senior Daughters and Fathers).
PFA Lecture: Martha Holmes, producer of the BBC "Life" Series

Martha Holmes, producer of the BBC series ‘Life’ was the guest speaker at this year's PFA Lecture entitled ‘Working With Wildlife’ held on Wednesday 9th February. For anyone who had watched the series or those with an interest in wildlife, or even the budding film producer, it was a fascinating insight into how a wildlife programme is made. With snippets from the many documentaries and dramas she has been a part of and peppered with fascinating anecdotes Martha Holmes had adults wishing they could return to school and study Biology, and girls rethinking their options! Having faced death on numerous occasions, coming within three feet of being crushed by a Humpback Whale, face to face with a very cute polar bear cub and its not so cute mother and rescued from a rapidly melting ice plate with around three hours to spare, Martha Holmes certainly has had some extraordinary experiences. The tales related were truly captivating, the images astounding and the lecture a fascinating event for all who attended.

QM's budding designers and business leaders enjoyed an exclusive insight into how to build a successful business yesterday evening.
Cath Kidston, one of Britain's leading entrepreneurs, was the guest speaker at the annual lecture sponsored by the school's Parents' and Friends' Association. She also judged a textile design competition and presented prizes to winners Lucy Davidson (1st), Mamie Kirk (2nd) and Hattie Foster (3rd) in the junior section and Julia Trzpis (1st), Daisy Miller (2nd) and Molly Kinnaird (3rd) in the senior section.
Cath explained how she started her business and how it has grown at an extraordinary pace over the last 15 years. Additionally, she gave the girls some tips on success in the world of work and, judging by the scope of the questions they asked, she has given many girls inspiration and ideas for the future.

OMA & PFA Celebrate with Dr & Mrs Chapman
/PFA-OMA-for-web.aspx)
More than 600 people gathered at QM on Sunday 5th July to mark Dr & Mrs Chapman's retirement. The Chaplain led a special service of celebration which was followed by presentations and speeches from the Old Margaretian Association and the Parents' and Friends' Association, a theatrical review and a Hog Roast.
Entertainment was provided by sixties tribute band, "Eight Miles High" who introduced current pupils to the music most enjoyed by their Headmaster. The PFA presented Dr Chapman with a telescope to enable him to achieve his long-held ambition of taking up astronomy in his retirement. Mr & Mrs Chapman also received a commemorative silver salver engraved with the school crest and a substantial cheque.
In his speech, Nick Brown, Chairman of the PFA, commented on the tremendous advances in academic achievement and the amazing developments to the school's facilities during the last sixteen years. He said that "having arrived at a good school, Dr Chapman was leaving behind a great school, thanks to his inspirational leadership."
The Old Margaretian Association was equally appreciative of the support and commitment of both Dr and Mrs Chapman over the last 16 years. The OMA presented them with a specially commissioned china coffee-set which is a copy of some early china belonging to the school which Mrs Chapman has long admired. Adrienne Owen, Chairman of the OMA, thanked the Chapmans on behalf of the Association for looking after "their" school and "ensuring that it remained the happy, welcoming place it has always been." Dr Chapman was made a Vice President of the Association and Mrs Chapman an honorary Old Girl.
